Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Secure Sentimental Triumph Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the stadium as Forest fans reveled in another result against their Swedish opponents. Much has occurred since Francis's winning header secured the European Cup back in 1979, but Forest still cherish those memories. Equally, significant changes have occurred in the weeks since the manager took charge, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and securing a comfortable win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of advancing in the European competition.

Building Momentum with Third Straight Victory

For Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after finishing sixth in their home competition – marked a third straight triumph across every tournament and added to the momentum gained from last weekend’s success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a re-run of Forest’s European Cup triumph in name, the game itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or jitters.

This was an occasion filled with nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the showpiece event over four decades past.

The home side fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of that era by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's team from then were also present. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together prior to the match. Forest legends and their teammates received a rousing welcome when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically superb display was shown in the home stand.

Remembering the Past

“30th May 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left,” read one part of a large tifo, in block capitals. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant tifo showed Clough observing events beside his assistant Peter Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.

Dominance from the Outset

So, Forest had soaked up those beautiful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an attempt off target inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his maiden European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Yates, who came to the club as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence captained by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a defender and into the path of Yates, who swept home right-footed from the edge of the box to score his maiden strike since March.

Another Goal Confirms Dominance

Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his unmarked header saved by the shot-stopper Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the rebound from close range. McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and only his second appearance since the autumn, was the catalyst, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.

A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected aside off the back Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Man City forward Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic also previously had a powerful header smartly repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the former Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on 9 November, and they struggled to match the home team's energy. Forest made it 3-0 when the defender applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

Forest then pushed for more, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from distance. It was one of those evenings. The manager, mindful of the upcoming domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they also scored three times, though he called on substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the second half.

Smooth Evening for the Team

It proved a flawless night for Forest. Dyche could take off Murillo with the match long since sewn up and later brought on teenage defender Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop demonstrated they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
